Field Trips

25 Jan

While I’m all for class field trips, usually meaning downtown in the city, somewhere close, convenient and affordable for everyone, I didn’t expect my teacher today to propose going to Vancouver/Seattle for a four day weekend type thing. While it sounds pretty great, it’s not exactly my type of traveling, two cities in 3-4 days? A bit overwhelming. Two days traveling on a bus is not my cup of tea and most of all – I have nothing in my budget for this kind of thing.

I’m already broke, I really can’t afford something like this on a whim. Plus, in my mind set, doing a trip like that just isn’t worth it or the money spent.

If I were going to Vancouver and Seattle I’d at least make it a week if not two, not one day in each city bustling around to numerous galleries and the like without really even being able to soak in anything of the city itself. Also, I figure the nights will be like Italy all over again, everyone getting having a party or being loud in general in another room, while I have a bath to myself and go to bed early.

I probably sounded about 78 just then, but that’s what I did in Florence haha. It was actually quite nice to have a moment of quiet, the hotel room all to myself without the 5 other girls and get some much needed sleep.

If this trip happens, I’m quite sure I’m staying put at home.

There went 2nd year (again)

16 Apr

Two years left! Yesterday was the final day of classes for my second year (third year at ACAD.)

Now all that is left is three one-on-one sessions with my instructors and all is golden.

I’m making up a portfolio for one of my teachers and it’s really cool to have an overview of what I’ve accomplished this term and the year as a whole. I don’t feel I’ve learnt much until I talk to people and answer questions. It’s really gratifying to see how far I’ve come and see my chances of “making it” increase all that much more.

Now I have to focus on packing and getting out of residence and finding work.

On the more crafty side of things, LR found a book he really wants to get. It’s called Fashion Geek written by Diana Eng. With my sewing skills, his crochet and tech skills we should be able to create something pretty amazing.

High fashion goes digital with Diana Eng! In Fashion Geek, Diana pioneers an emerging generation of tech savvy women crafters (or would-be crafters) who demand stylish yet practical designs that are chemically charged. Now you can take simple, girly items such as a hoodie or scarf and transform them into must-have techno-accessories through approachable, step-by-step directions. Full-color photos make it easy to see how every project comes to life.

From what I gather it’s making clothing that you can fit your iPod in or other tech devices but keeping it subtle. I have a feeling a possible collaboration is in the future. It looks pretty fun, I’m interested to see what kind of projects are in there and how we might be able to change them up for something that might work for one of his MADT (media arts and digital technologies) projects.

This is what happens on Skype.

Easter Dinner, Assignments & Jealousy

5 Apr

Man, tonight’s Easter dinner was amazing. My parents and I went over to a friends house as they were cooking. We had leg of lamb, potatoes with fennel in and carrots with olive oil and some herbage. Some fruit flan for desert. Very tasty. I also had much fun giving affection to their two Devon Rex cats, Gotcha and Karma.

My parents failed to tell me they are going to Scotland and Ireland next year, which I suppose is fair. They are adults after all. I am extreeeeeeeeemely jealous!! Though, a bit glad I’m not going as all they are doing is playing golf, mainly. I’m sure a few scotch places along the way and whatever else. Not my cup of tea.

I’m in Edmonton for the long weekend, leaving tomorrow. I met up with my very good friend AW and we hung out, went for hot chocolate and gigantic cookies! We also went out to the Grainery, of course, and I got my standard shot. I made A humour me by holding my white card. She is not as willing and totally did the expression I predicted she would. Impatient unwilling model.

On the school front summer starts officially on the 27th of April, though I’m sure I will be finished a week or so before then. I’ve started looking for jobs and it sucks so far but I need cash. I’m going to be moving into my grandparents place which should be… eventful. I was just thinking the other day that I hope I’m not there too long as the bed I’m going to be sleeping on is something to be desired. Though, can’t moan too much with free food and board.

Assignments are going really well. I’m sort of ahead of myself. I’ve got all photos for one class finished. I would show them but thanks to some new in class legislation I can’t post them anywhere. Really lame. In two weeks time everyone can see everything. Then hopefully it will be forgotten about next year.

Assignments that are due until the end of the year:
Archetype/fairytale that fits into editorial fashion – no clue what I’m doing. not started.
3D paper object thing. – also no clue, not started.
Open project with complex lighting.  – finished. awesome.
Fashion/Advert with complex lighting. – finished. also awesome.
Alternative Process/presentation. – started. mega awesome.

I can’t wait until the shackles are off so I can show everyone what I’ve done!

Feedback from my Design Fundamentals teacher:
“You apply yourself well and I think that you generally know what you want, but your work hints at two disparate desires. At the same time you are making sculpture or cross-stitching, you are also photographing some cliché subjects. In some ways, I see this as a related phenomenon. It seems like you are struggling to find your artistic voice so that you can make art, yet you don’t see that as an easy option with photography. If I am correct in my interpretations, my advice to you would be to broaden your understanding of what art and photography can be. While you may not know how to make your photographs into what you see as art right now, if you don’t try, it will become more and more difficult. I encourage you to make photographs for yourself for a while, don’t pay attention to assignments or the popular aesthetic, just make some art with your camera (and no barns).”

I’m not sure what to make of that. One thing I really am asking myself is why I am in photo. It seems with my stitching and mixed media it isnt really what the major is about and i would be more suited for the drawing major which is pretty much anything goes.

Make photos for myself without paying attention to assignments. Such a tough thing to do when one is so bogged down with homework.

I am struggling to find my voice. I think this is ok for a second year student. I have 2.5 more years to find that. if I haven’t found it by graduation then that’s a huge issue. I trust I will have found something by then. I don’t tend to go with common trends anyway so I don’t think that is anything to be concerned about but I don’t have a definitive thing or genre I like photographing. I like my barns even if they are cliche and Thomas Kinkade I’m not going to stop that. at least I’ll keep up with the grainery anyways.

His feedback makes me feel a bit exposed and vulnerable. i don’t know what to say to someone about what I do or where I’m going with my work because I don’t really know. I know I have passion for it and want to make it my living. this is why I’m at ACAD in the first place to gain the skill and knowledge. I don’t think I could go about it without that environment. I don’t really know what to say about that feedback.

i got accepted into ACAD. (Alberta College of Art and Design). im pretty excited but now im kinda getting worried about how im going to pay for everything. im going to apply for government and provincial loans im just not sure if i can get them because of how much my parents make and that im an only child.
my mom was saying the government one is $211/week so thats $844/month. not enough for everything i need.

my mom sent me an e-mail showing that she changed my flight and isnt asking me to pay anything for it because shes “so happy i got into college.” !

i bought one of those desk top calanders. Todays murphy’s law:
MacPherson’s Theory of Entropy
it requires less energy to take an object out of its proper place that to put it back.
