Col. Franz Polzer, chief investigator of the district of Lower Austria, shows a picture of Josef Fritzl at a press conference on April 28, 2008, in Amstetten, Austria. According to police, Fritzl kept his daughter, known as Elisabeth, imprisoned in his basement and sexually abused her. Now 42, she had seven children. Three, now ages 5, 18 and 19, had never seen the light of day until the eldest was recently taken to hospital because of a severe illness. (Johannes Simon/Getty Images)

A photo taken by a forensic team and released by the Austrian police with the permission of Austria’s prosecution office shows a hidden room in the house. Austrians dubbed the apartment the ‘house of horrors.’ It included a high-tech, windowless cell where Elisabeth allegedly gave birth to seven of her father’s children. Two police forensics teams arrived on the scene Monday morning and technicians in white suits entered the apartment block in Amstetten, a blue-collar town about 120 kilometres west of Vienna.
